I began researching salt water tanks in the summer of 1999, and built my first tank (a nano) in the spring of 2000. That tank was built to experiment with concrete "live rock" as an alternative to typical live rock which is purchased in fish stores. Subsequently I tore it down and moved from Phoenix to Ithaca, NY. There I planned on building a larger system, using a DIY stand and DIY lighting as well as building my own refugium and sump areas.
My display uses the DSB (Deep Sand Bed) method, and a substantial amount of concrete (or Aragocrete) live rock. All filtration is non-mechanical and utilizes as many natural methods as possible to maintain water quality. While the setup was done this way primarily to reduce costs, I've found that it is a very low maintenance salt water aquarium. The secondary reason for this type of setup was the need for as wide a variety of life forms as possible, which in turn offers a consistent food source for my mandarin dragon(et). Please continue through my site to view a few pictures
and enjoy some salt water aquarium "war
stories" which I hope will be helpful to other people who enjoy
this fascinating and sometimes annoying hobby. |
